Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Lovely design out of China: The RED wires are 230v AC input. Note how the tracks for the mains come along the PCB, and are within 0.5mm of each other - lovely design! The track just below and to the right of the mains connections, is the rectified AC, sitting at about 325v DC - about 0.7mm from the phase connection of the incoming AC...... Nasty, nasty, nasty. Even when I design 24v AC stuff, I put the AC traces from the tranny at least 5mm apart, and that is at 24v - this is a 230v thing. It has been "Decommissioned" - I will replace with a standard isolated tranny. EDIT - I was hoping for a nice close-up image, but the forum software is re-sizing the image to the one you see - it did not used to do this... However, hopefully you can see what I am referring to. I like the PCB fuse on the track near the bottom edge. |

Grogster the forum has been resizing images down for a few years now. JPG ( for general photos ) to 500 pixels wide, GIF ( perfect for diagrams, or images with a low colour count ) to 1000 pixels wide. The resizing was done at the request of forum members at the time, people were uploading images straight from their camera, over 2000 pixels wide or more, and it was making the posts much wader than most peoples screens, so they had to scrol left and right to read it. I've seen a few power supplies like this, and I do the same, decommision them to the junk pile. If it belonged to a customer or friend, I would refuse to repair it and explain why. This sort of circuit layout is technically illegal in Australia and should not be imported. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Okey dokey. I thought it was probably something like that. I am not complaining - I was just mentioning that I thought the image would come up bigger but C'est La Vie... I don't know what voltage they use in China, but perhaps it is just a case of not caring over there, if it goes bang? Not sure what kind of electrical safety regulations are in place there. You can get away with layouts like this for low-voltage, as everyone knows, but by the same token, you should know that you CAN'T do this kind of layout with high voltage. Smoke makes things work.
