Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I have just bought another Morris 1300, so I will no-doubt need some parts. I hope to add more listings soon.

Thanks Isaiah and Grogster,

Yeah site is live, but I'm hopping to get more content ( parts wanted or for sale ) before I try some promotion on facebook, etc.

Glenn, do you have some issues with continuing TheBackShed? If so, I would be more than happy to make a donation if that would help.

Doug.

PS. I find the forum absolutely fantastic and a unsurpassed site of knowledge and support - it would be a tragedy if it could not continue. D.

Yes there is too much information on this sight to loose.
I'm on several forums up here and they all are slow compared to a couple yrs ago.
Some of the alternative media are having getting funds to stay on the net.
Bub and I would make a donation also .

Glenn, totally agree with the others, TheBackshed is way too important to lose. I don’t have any interest in the car parts site but I would be very happy to make a donation &/or subscribe annually. I think a lot of the members would be happy to pay a yearly subscription.
Why not post a new topic on each of the main forums to gauge how many were prepared to contribute and maybe suggest some options/subs cost. I’d post it as a “normal” topic too, because I think many people wouldn’t be reading the “stickies” regularly. You might need to repeat it two or three times so that everyone sees it - especially with the Xmas holidays on us now.

Best Regards,
Greg

Thanks Guys but the site pays for itself, and leaves me enough to buy a coffee a day.

I'm not a fan of donate buttons, I would rather anyone using a ad blocker whitelist this site and maybe click on a ad or two if its of interest to them. The ads were more than enough a few years ago but took a massive dive and never recovered, its as common story for sites like this, and its the reason many hobby sites fall into disrepair.

The aim of the autosearch site is to grow a new type of traffic, and a new revenue stream. This would restore my enthusiasm for the site and give me a reason to get involved with it again.

Worse case scenario, if the ads stopped paying and the hackers/spammers got to much to keep under control, I would disable the forum but keep it online in read only, so the information would be saved and available. I know how valuable the years of posts are as a resource.

I dont run an adblocker. I have facebook script blocked but all the google java and ajax is running.

I see the technews (sometimes) phil and trevs sponsorship and diyode. mostly there is nothing or occasionally blank boxes.
what have i got set wrong?

edit: googleadservices.com does not come up in the list, I have enabled it on another site then come back here but it makes no difference. ??? I dont see gstatic either.

Hi Yahoo

I wonder. Does the address in your browser to the forum start with a http or a https

Google send out this demand last year that all web sites that use google ads must be https sites. Installing the SSL certificate was a real pain in the bum! I also had to spend a day editing links within the site to use https instead of http.

If your link is http, does changing it to https make the ads appear?

Yeah, you are right the shortcut I used today was the old http.

when I switch to https I get a padlock with an alert triangle, still no ads.

if I hit disable protection for now, the ads show up.

PS works fine on all my mobile devices with chrome but I also get the not secure message with chrome on the PC but the ads do appear.

Yeah this https is a real pain in the butt. If a image in a post isnt from a https source, the whole page is considered not secure. I'll need to go over it again looking for any http only links in the forum code. If a members links to a external non-secure image or file, that also makes the whole page insecure, but that cant be helped.

The old Google links to the http version is also a pain in the butt! I need to add code to detect if the page loaded was http or https, and if http, redirect to https. Nice little job over the Christmas break.

Its this attitude by the likes of Google, Facebook, etc, that kills sites like this. And now the browsers label a normal http site as "Not Secure", which makes people think they are at risk by using the site. Its all BS, its not a bank or finance web site, it doesn't ask for credit card information, its just a friggen hobby site!

Add to that the 200 packets a minute hitting the server from China based hackers and spammers!

Glad I read this as my saved bookmark was from 2016 www.thebackshed.com

I wasn't getting any adds with my blocker turned off.

Now its right. I hope it'll help with keeping TBS up and running.

If the time comes I too would click a paypal donate button because this is

one of the best forums I been on. The help is always here for new and old.

Thanks for your work at keeping TBS up and running.

Thanks Quazee

Yeah I'm going to sort out the http -> https issues this week, should get some ads back up. It's mostly for the guests, for every member there are about 20 non-members ( guests ) reading the forums, so they wouldnt have seen the ads either.

I really dont like the idea of a donate button, but everyone is suggesting I get one so maybe I should swallow my pride and get one. I'll have a think about it over Christmas.

always hard to do. Many a good idea can become a chore. Can't offer any tips for success, my method is to distance myself, mentally, from the maintenance task and just plod away at it - auto-pilot mode. Works for me. Perhaps consider appointing a trusted admin or two to share the load... their freshness and enthusiasm will buoy you up and take some of the strain - just keep good backups

A tragedy. I hope you would consider that tip-jar or donate button way before that. Even pass the site to some fresh-faced enthusiast who will keep it going. I definitely would use a tip-jar (do already on several sites I use) - if an article's useful to me, it's worth a few quid and I don't really feel it. The only argument then is over who "owns" the info... you might need to update your Ts&Cs... everything's a bloody minefield eh?

I send money to several people that I get a benefit from via their paypal.me

Damian Maguire just done a youtube video on driving a big VFD running 3 phase from single phase converted to DC. Thats worth 50 or 100 bucks as a donation to me. his work on the prius electric drive system is worth a lot more if we/I/he can get it running.

I dont think there is any permanent solution to funding a forum, the middlemen find new ways to bleed the system dry. Just got to blow where the wind takes us.

Holy excrement. That's a lot every two mins.
Is that something new, or have they always been hitting the forum that much?
