Gday everyone, I have been given some equipment( old motors) that needs painting. I wish to remove the name plates and specification tags that are held on by Drive Screws. https://www.rivetsonline.com/drive-screws#1 I guess you will all be familiar with them. Is there any way to remove these from cast iron housings? Ideally I dont want to grind them off as it will be hell to drill them out ( about 1/8"/3mm dia. ). I have has success with transformers, but it seems laminations dont hold them in as well as cast iron. Thanks in advance Joe |

I have a set of suttons left hand drills that I have had for years (since my apprenticeship actually) that work well on anything like that (or broken/stripped bolts/screws) Couple of taps with a centerpunch then slow speed drill out, when it bite will spin them right out every time I found Note these are NOT easyouts, but actual reverse threaded drill bits |

How about some idea of the size of these things? Drilling out might only work if the screw head is bigger than 4mm or so. Klaus |

Tinker, Please read post 1 Joe p.s. They are American, and as I havent managed to extract one yet I "guess" about 3mm That is the head size, I "imagine " the shaft size to be "about " 2 to maybe 2.5 mm. I will post a couple of pics tomorrow |

Nope, they are not always easy to get them out, sometimes have had success using a ground down chisel and carefully work around them without damaging the nameplate. failing that, often the hole that they are in is drilled deep enough to just punch down further if the top is busted off. You may have to drill new holes just beside the old ones, and hope the nameplate can still cover them.? Recently did some name plates, worked Ok. Got the U-Drive Screws from a place in ipswich , Its only a new website Here Link did not work http://www.nutzandboltz.com.au/home.html Yep works now. Cheers Aaron Off The Grid |

Yah, Revlac has it. I think I will try using a dremel tool with thin cutting disc, make a screwdriver slot as it were. Thanks everybody Joe |
