Gee, I thought I was just a whinger, but I really have stirred up a hornets nest ,can't help it , thats just me,lol.

Anyhow VW still have my car ,three days now trying to fix/replace/fathom out something that the buffheads don,t know much about ,seems.
But they have given me a loan car ,so I better be kind ...

LOL, I'm chuckelling about the poor buggers down the track from now that haven't come across this problem -who would even think that a bloody box trailer with new beaut LED lights ,just two of them, would cause such dramas ??

wonder what will be my surprise tomorrow at VW ???

I reckon many us old farts here on the Forum have just about timed the electronic age to absolute perfection.

Valves, then transistors, integrated circuits, microprocessors, all pretty exciting stuff to learn about and fiddle with.

But now, we are seeing surface mount multilayer boards, and things so small and so complicated they are really unrepairable, even if you did have a circuit and full maintenance and repair manual (remember those?).

I know quite a few old timers that built their own black and white TV set, stereo amplifier, or ham radio rig back in ancient times.

I have yet to see any of the new age snowflakes assemble their own mobile phone or lap top computer out of a bunch of individual components.

Cars are going the same way. Once all you needed was a screwdriver, pliers and a shifting spanner, plus a suitably large hammer (for adjustments).

And you could usually get mobile again without too much drama.
Not so today.Edited by Warpspeed 2018-05-14

Well, I got my VW "Tiugan" back and all seems to be working OK .

This was an aftermarket fix for my brand new LED light box trailer .

I'd hate to pay for this mod, well, I had their courtesy car for 3 days , then the mechanic told me they were required to fit a new wiring loom from the front under the dash to the boot. Hell, glad I did not have to pay for that!!. Bloody betcha it cost more than the brand new gal trailer ,($1050). So, the mechanic told me --don,t ask how much it cost ,just take it away and be happy !!!.( it was a warranty job).

So folks, there ya go , what I thought was a screwdriver and sidecutter job ,turned into a nightmare.

plus , mechanic said DON,T use any other trailer -unless you can afford a new computer,.

Actually thats the norm, I used to work with Toyotas, and to fit the factory towbar to the landcruisers means drilling two 1/2" holes in the chassis rails (the aftermarket towbars use the existing holes about 20mm away- but that means you have to make the plate 20mm longer- cant have that!!)
You then run a new cable from the engine bay to the rear, runs halfway down one chassis rail, crosses over then runs the other half on the other side. Then if you wanted electric brakes for a van (which is what most cruisers are bought for lol) you then run another cable from inside the cabin and down to the rear again- shame it only uses 3mm blue cable for the brakes, which is too small so you then have to run ANOTHER cable from the battery to the controller, and then another 5/6mm cable to the rear to make the brakes on a twin axle van actually work.........

Seriously????

Oh and unless you fit yet ANOTHER box under the bonnet, it wont work with led lights......
Total cost to do this is over 3g if you dont get it done at time of purchase

You said it was for that trailer only- did they do anything to the trailer itself?

That was the issue I had with the VW I did, it often uses hire trailers- which obviously dont have the load resisters needed to make the led lights work with the canbus system- so I had to 'modify' the dealer installed 'bodgejob' install to make it work on any trailer, plus I used that as a chance to get the reversing sensors working correctly again as the dealer installed towbar package disabled the center sensors permanently grrr
