Gday peeps for a long time ive thought about diving into solar and ive taken the plung ive gone ahead i just purchased 2x 25watt solar mono crystal....panals,
and looking into purchasing a regulator, inverter 600-1000watt? and batterys.
so my questions are im looking to power 3x 130 watt energy saver lamps, a 2x30watt water pump and maybe have the access power (if any)fed upstairs to power a laptop 90watt. all up 540wattt is this possable..?
do i need to only look at 20amp 24v regulators 600wattt and above..?to regulate the batterys for this system or can i use a smaller watt rated/amp rated regulator to charge the batteryy..?
inverter wise is this one ok..100owatt
and what batterys do u guys recomend..

Hi Mud-Lover

Im not sure what you want to accomplish with your system, you mention 540 watts if all is turned on, so would assume half this as an average draw, if this is the case you have only 20 % of that in the panels you purchased without allowing for charging losses, to run what you want I feel it would need at least 3 100 watt panels.
As for the regulator a 20 amp one would be OK.
A single 250 amphr gel cell or the equivalent would be required.
Have a look at the LED lighting as it is a lot more efficient and doesn't need an inverter to run.
A 1200 watt pure sine wave inverter would be the best as the smaller ones have no reserve capacity.

You will get many other opinions from the forum, all valid and true so rush in slowly.

thanks bob for your reply, i only need to run the lights for 18hrs the rest fo the time they r off, and the water pump only needs to b powerd 5 times for 5 mins each day.. the rest of the time the system wont be running... im taking my time, with the setup as its all new to me.. led lights just dont cut for what i need thanks..

Hi mud lover

It sounds like that you need to do an energy audit on each part of your system to find out the actual watts consumed each day to be accurate, then work out the power collected by the panels during an average 5-6 hour period each day to compare the two, keeping in mind that the battery capacity needs to be 3 to 5 times the daily usage at half discharge. This to allow for overcast or rain.

There will also be a charging loss of around 10% to take into account and if the inverter is used there will be a loss there to, depending on the inverter efficiency, I allow for a 20% loss, thats why it is best to run as much as you can direct off the battery.
