I'm just starting to build a wind generator with a F&P,
I know that 12volts changes to 240volts, but what happens to the watts and amps? What do they start out as and what do they end up as?

basic electricity:
12 x 20 = 240
So, you need 20 Amps @ 12V for each Amp @ 240V.
Watt = volt x Amp

That's as basic as I can put it Jasmine, there is obviously more to electricity but you would do better with a bit off googling, there is a lot of info online.

Thanks I think I understand.
For example.
12volts at 20amps would also be 240watts then, when put through an inverter would produce 240volts at 1amp and 240watts. Therefore as the volts go up the amps come down and the watts remain the same. Is that correct? and would it be enough to run anything?

Yes, its basically correct in theory but as Inverters also have losses the watts out do not exactly equal the watts in.

Run anything? its a big word, it depends
You really need to be more specific and tell us what you would like to run from the inverter.

Thanks, I thought 1amp would'nt be enough to run anything, however if everything is tied in then I guess that something that needs 240 watts would only draw 1amp,
and something that needs 1kw would draw 4 amps,therefore if the power goes to a battery bank first
then a lot more is possible, right?
Originally I wanted to feed back to the grid, now maybe I'll use it to power my workshop to run various power tools.

Jasmine, you'll need a *very* big capacity battery bank to draw 1KW from for any length of time.

Does that mean I can't use a 1400 watt angle grinder?
Maybe I should get the mains connected. This seems all too complicated.

Take 1 everexeed 12 volt 200 amp hour battery available in perth 1 3000 watt modified inverter and go to work you will be suprised what you can do off 1 battery these are not cheap but you get what you pay for I use mine every day building houses Mick.

Thanks, have been checking out 3000w inverters, are the ordinary ones available on ebay suitable, or do they have to have a pure sine wave?
