Hi Guys, I am planning to build a solar hot water system, but am unable to mount panels below storage vessel, so am considering pumping using a 12v pump (a specialist item) and driving with say a 15 - 20 watt pv panel. I understand this arrangment avoids the need for controls.(if the sun shines the pumps runs -if not it doesn't)

hi bernie seach for words of wisdom from allan s and he used a craig davies 12 v car pump/a maximisser and a 5 watt panel to do the job with a link for the maximisser circuit

Hi Bernie Re- storage vessel do you mean Cylinder/calorifer ? also why don't you make it a sealed system with expansion vessel.
I am also one day going to build a solar system on my finca in Spain (once I get a roof on it !), and will start by making a home made panel with 15mm risers onto 28mm headers with fixed to whatever comes to hand, with some nice big thick Kingspan insulation and double glazed unit to trap the heat in, this is just at the idea/ dream stage like most of my project.
PS were abouts are you in France ?

What is there that you want to now ?

Is it the design and size of the system or just information on the pumping ?

Thanks Phil, Matt & Feral for replies.
It is just the pumping I need advice on, I was planning on DIY panels totalling about 2-3 sq meters and a storage vessel of 200 litres. ( a sealed system as the storage vessel has a coil in it, I can then put an anti-freeze in the primary circuit)
Phil , I am in the Limousin, moved here from Cornwall 3 1/2 years ago.

Hi Bernie,

The pump will probably need to be made from metal, and a sealed unit. The working fluid can reach temps of 65+ degrees C. Be careful using ethylene glycol antifreeze, as leaks into the water side will render the water unsuitable for drinking.

Hi vent it back, not as good as using a pump.hot water will flow down hill.
