We don't use much electricity, so we don't need anything too heavy-duty. I would like to run our cabin on solar electricity, but am having trouble getting help as far as what size battery, inverter, solar panel I will need. I know I also need a regulator, but don't know anything about them either. From start to finish, what do I need and where can I get all he parts I need at a reasonable price? Is it cost-effective to buy an already put together solar generator?

Hi Jeck_martin

You might need to talk to someone who sells solar installations, there's a lot of different paths you can do down in the planning stage. They will have a few questions, like how much power do you use on average, and at peak times, what mounting options do you have, can you use a generator for peak needs, or does the inverted need to supply everything, etc. Once planned properly, its a fairly straight foward process to install.

Also check out BuildItSolar http://www.builditsolar.com/.

Hi Jack,

Its worth checking out this site:
http://www.solaronline.com.au/solar_system_basics

It contains a guide to figuring out how much energy you use, how many solar panels you'll need and how big a battery bank you'll need. That'll give you a good starting point. It also explains things like regulators and inverters.

The information on the site Glenn suggested is also excellent.

It can be cheaper to put the system together yourself, but many people forget to include the cost of mounting hardware and cables in the calculation...
